These pics aren't great, but I wanted to share what I learned about these birds! Killdeer are highly monogamous birds! They love rocks and will lay their eggs right in the open on a pile of rocks. They trust their own camouflage so much they will just chill there sitting on the rock looking like a fat blob. These Killdeer have lived off of Airline Hwy, on the Laplace side of the Bonnet Carre Spillway bridge. They have been a pair here for at least 3 years! Apparently, a Killdeer will pretend to have a broken wing in order to lure predators away from its partner. I have never seen them do this but pics online make it look pretty cool.
let's project our human ideals of monogamy onto these 2 black vultures (Coragyps atratus)
